5. Your First Tweet

So, now that you've adjusted your settings, it's time (at last!) for your FIRST TWEET. For this first tweet, include the #OpenTeachingOU hashtag to connect up with other people using Twitter at OU.

Go to (and log in if needed). If this is a new account and you have not tweeted yet, you will see a message about getting started before the tweet editing box:

Tweets are strictly limited to 140 characters. Hashtags are not case-sensitive, so #OpenTeachingOU or #openteachingou have the same effect.

If you include a link, paste in the complete URL, and Twitter will automatically shorten that for you. As you type, Twitter will show you how many characters you have remaining.

When you are done, click on the Tweet button. You should now see a Tweet in your timeline, and your tweet will also appear (with a few seconds delay) in the stream for the #OpenTeachingOU hashtag.

NEXT STEP => You are now tweeting! Next, you will follow some people, and you will see their tweets too!

About those 140 characters... As with text messaging, the strict character limits at Twitter have spawned all kinds of acronyms; you can see a few listed here: Twitter Lingo Cheat Sheet. :-)
